"Give me the fucking key, come on," demands Freddie as he wants to get the show going right after Tie Your Mother Down. He sings "It's so..." twice before finally beginning the song. This hesitated start leads to Freddie's very unique choices of notes, phrasing and dynamics in the first verse. "I can tell this is going to be a fun night," says Freddie after A Kind Of Magic. It sounds like he's trying to convince himself more than anyone else. He doesn't seem to be in a great mood tonight. He goes through the motions, both in his speeches and his delivery of many of the songs. John does some very funky bass work in the middle section of Another One Bites The Dust. After the song, the audience shout for Mustapha. "Fuck Mustapha. I don't know him," is Freddie's reply. He then gives his speech about how the band aren't splitting up despite what some papers are reporting. "That is a load of shit... just like I've got in this hankie." He then introduces Who Wants To Live Forever, and adds, "I mean, who really does, anyway?" Before Brian begins his guitar solo, Freddie says, "I'm gonna fuck off quietly." The reason for Mercury's sudden change in attitude? At some point before the show he may well have visited the Munich gay scene which he used to frequent and his mortality hit him hard, perhaps for the first time. The awareness of this issue hit its peak in Munich's gay community around this time, as exemplified by a German newspaper article on AIDS stating that the reaper was "cleaning Munich's streets." This vibe undoubtedly affected Freddie greatly. Here is a brief review of the show from a German magazine called Bravo (submitted by Alessio Rizzitelli), and a photo set taken by Wolfgang Gürster: http://www.queenfcg.de |
